This policy covers the "Call BS on your legal bill" tool at billcheck.general.legal (the "Tool"). The Tool is built and operated by General Legal, Inc. ("we," "us"). Legal services referenced in your results, and any engagement you enter into after using the Tool, are provided by General Legal, LLP, a separately licensed law firm. This policy explains what we collect through the Tool, why, and how to stop hearing from us.
What we collect
- Your email address and marketing consent. The Tool asks for your email before showing results. We record the email, the fact that you agreed to be contacted, the time, and the IP address the request came from, as evidence that consent was actually given.
- Your bill, only if you choose to send it. By default your invoice is read and analyzed entirely in your browser; the file and its contents never reach our servers. If you turn on "Analyze with AI," the extracted text of your bill — with obvious identifiers (emails, phone numbers, URLs, long ID numbers, and the letterhead block) stripped out on your device first — is sent to our server and to our AI provider, Anthropic, solely to generate your analysis. We do not store that text after your result is produced; it exists only for the duration of that request.
- Basic technical data. Standard request information (such as IP address) is used briefly to prevent abuse of the Tool (for example, rate-limiting) and is not retained beyond what is needed for that purpose.
How we use it
- To generate and show you the bill comparison you asked for.
- To send you your comparison and to follow up with you about General Legal's services, because you agreed to that when you submitted your email.
- To detect and prevent abuse of the Tool.
We do not use your bill content for marketing, and we do not publish anything you submit without asking you first and getting your separate, explicit permission to do so.
Who we share it with
- Anthropic, PBC — our AI provider, and only the redacted bill text, and only if you enable AI analysis. Anthropic processes that text under its own API terms to generate your result; we do not send your email address to Anthropic.
- Vercel Inc. — our hosting provider, which runs the Tool's servers.
- General Legal, LLP — we share your email, consent record, and comparison results with the firm so it can follow up with you about the legal services described in your results, consistent with the consent you gave when you submitted your email.
We do not sell or rent your personal information to anyone.
Your choices
- Unsubscribe. Every marketing email from us includes a one-click unsubscribe link. Clicking it removes you from our marketing list immediately and permanently.
- Request access, correction, or deletion. Email hello@general.legal and we will act on your request within a reasonable time.
- California residents have the right, under the CCPA, to know what personal information we hold about you, to request its deletion, and to opt out of any sale or sharing of it. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA. You can exercise these rights by emailing hello@general.legal.
How long we keep it
We keep your email and consent record until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. We do not retain bill text submitted for AI analysis once your result has been produced.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the information we hold, including transport encryption and access controls on our storage. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Not legal advice
The Tool and this policy are provided for general information only. Using the Tool does not create an attorney-client relationship, and nothing on this site or generated by the Tool is legal advice.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above.
